Sunflower Seeds

The sunflower seeds are proving a big hit this week in the bird feeder.  The goldfinches always come in pairs.

The siskins (at least I think its a siskin as I'd never seen one before this week) tend to join in regardless of who else is around and are quite bold.

And the greenfinches also generally arrive in pairs too

I think he's wondering what on earth I'm doing with the camera up against the conservatory window!

  1. Love watching the birds on our feeders. They're not so fond of the peanuts. They enjoy the mixed seed. But most of all, the female blackbirds will defend the daily supply of mealworms at all costs!

  2. Lovely pictures, its so nice to see the birds all collecting twigs for the nests. we have a bunch of noisy little sparrows outside our window, who would think that such tiny birds could make so much noise, not that I mind, I love to hear them all.

  3. How lovely to see bird pictures of the small and colourful variety; I have mostly creatures from the Corvidae family so they are large and mostly monochrome.

  4. Sunflower hearts are a big hit in my garden too, but the goldfinches go mad for the niger seed. That greenfinch looks like he's looking straight down your camera lens.

  6. Oh how lucky you are to get such colourful visitors Su. We see greenfinches here but not as regularly as in the past but have never spotted one single goldfinch let alone two. Most envious!

  7. Gorgeous images Su.

The birds seem to be shunning the feeder here ... I've no idea why. I do know I'm missing them!

  8. 'Our' goldfinches only eat niger seeds! Fussy or what? Actually it is supposed to be their preferred/ideal seed, which is why we've always used it. They ignore other feeders in favour of 'their' special one with the little black seeds inside!

  9. Lovely pictures,by the time I get my camera they always fly away,I have just sown some more sunflower seeds even though I know there will be a load of self sown from last year but they do make me smile when they are in flower and the birds do love them

  10. Lovely, we have ducks below our feeders & the odd pheasant ;) lovely bunch of tools you had back there, I'm struggling with a dodgy elbow or 2, just when I need to do a ton of pruning! I shall just have to approach half a shrub at a time....

  11. What lovely photos of your feathered visitors. I've never seen greenfinches in my garden, but enjoy watching the birds that do come. It can be quite mesmerising sometimes.

  12. How strange I spotted a pair of siskin for the first time too this week. We get through loads of sunflower hearts every week the goldfinch just can't seem to get enough.

  13. Lovely pictures - I put out a feeder a few weeks ago, after years of neglecting the birds (shame on me!). Today I saw my first bird on it (I think they have to get used to seeing the feeder before they trust it - possibly) - anyway it was great to see! xCathy

  14. I struggle to get decent bird photos. Yours are great. We have green finches too but they are very elusive! Every time I went off for the camera they scarpered.
